In accordance with the law passed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Nigerians within or outside the country are expected to register and obtain a National Identification Number (NIN) in order to be registered in the country’s National Database. This is to ensure that everyone in Nigeria can be accounted for. To this effect, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) was established by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007 and given the mandate to establish, own, operate, maintain and manage the National Identity Database in Nigeria, register persons covered by the Act, and assign a Unique National Identification Number (NIN) amongst others to those who are citizens of Nigeria as well as others legally residing within the country.
